Turning 16 is perhaps one of the most monumental occurrences in a New Jersey teenager's life. Not only are you a year older, but you are of age to obtain a driver's permit. Most young adults fail to realize that driving isn't simply a rite of passage. Before operating a motor vehicle, it is important that one fully comprehends the dangers associated with automobiles. For that reason, “The Early Bird” and the “Graduated Driver’s License (GDL)” program were created. 

Those who do not wish to partake in a driver's education course have the option of waiting until they turn 17 years old to obtain their license, but driver's education courses are very important when preparing to operate a motor vehicle.

Unfortunately, the leading cause of death for teenagers is that of motor vehicle wrecks. 16-year-old drivers have a higher crash rate than drivers of any other age. Therefore, it is important to be fully educated in vehicle and road safety before operating a vehicle. Operating a vehicle is oftentimes very intimidating for teenagers. Completing a driver's education course prior to obtaining one's license will help teenagers develop rudimentary vehicle control and traffic maneuvers. It teaches students how to safely operate a vehicle on busy interstates, at night, and during other dangerous driving circumstances. 

Although it may seem unimportant, driver's education stresses the importance of adjusting a vehicle's steering wheel, seat, and rear and side-view mirrors. It also allows for teens to practice communicating while driving, entering and exiting traffic, using turn lanes, changing lanes, and adjusting their vehicles' speeds when necessary. In addition to practicing driving, teenagers learn about various traffic signals and markings on the roadway. Perhaps the most important skill to develop as a driver is the ability to foresee hazards and unsafe situations. Other drivers and conditions are oftentimes much more dangerous than your own driving ability, but many young drivers are not experienced enough to identify potential dangers from other drivers.

• Student car is not acceptable for test. MVC does not allow cars to be used for road test if there is an obstruction between driver and passenger seat and hand brake is not accessible. MVC may not allow the use of a rental car on the road test.

 What to bring to a road test

• Original birth certificate or passport (used to buy the permit).
• Valid examination permit.
• An accompanying licensed driver.
• Red  decals must be on both plates of vehicle used for road test.
• A registered vehicle with current inspection sticker and insurance card.
• Examiner must be able to reach either the foot brake or parking brake
• Rental cars are only acceptable if the driver taking the test is included on the rental contract as an additional driver and is of contract age
• Use of a driving school car is permitted

When you pass the road test....

 The examiner will give you an authorization slip in addition to your permit to get your license at an MVC Agency.

 What if you fail the road test?

You must wait at least two weeks before taking the test again. If you fail more than twice, MVC may require you to wait six months before taking the road test again

 Remember!

• You may drive yourself to the testing area, as long as you are accompanied by a 21 year old or older NJ licensed driver and who has their license for 3 years or more. If your licensed driver is licensed from another state other than NJ they must drive the vehicle to the Road Test. Remember practice driving on the actual test course is prohibited.

• Remember to NEVER move the vehicle unless a licensed driver is in the vehicle. When using your own vehicle for the road test, please be aware of the following: You cannot use a vehicle that has any type of console that would prevent the examiner from reaching the brake. This type of vehicle must have a hand brake in the center console. If it does not it cannot be used for the road test.

• If you pass the road test, your permit is no longer valid. You must get your provisional license before you do any further driving. If you fail your test, you must wait at least 2 weeks before you can retake the test. You will be required to repeat all phases of the road test, not just the ones you failed.
